Application of alkaline waste from pulp industry to acid soil with pine Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Pértile,Patricia; Albuquerque,Jackson Adriano; Gatiboni,Luciano Colpo; Costa,André da; Warmling,Maria Izabel.
In Brazil extensive areas are covered with pine forests, planted for pulp and paper production. This industry generates solid alkaline waste, such as dregs. The application of this dregs to forest soils is an alternative for soil acidity correction and plant nutrient supply, as well as a solution for its proper disposal. The purpose of this study was to compare the residual effect of surface application of dregs and dolomitic lime on (a) changes in the physical and chemical properties of an acidic soil and (b) pine tree development. The experiment was carried out in 2004 in Bocaina do Sul, Santa Catarina, consisting of the application of increasing dreg and lime rates to a Pinus taeda L. production area, on a Humic Cambisol, in a randomized block design...

Quantification of the least limiting water range in an oxisol using two methodological strategies Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Moreira,Wagner Henrique; Tormena,Cássio Antônio; Betioli Junior,Edner; Figueiredo,Getulio Coutinho; Silva,Álvaro Pires da; Giarola,Neyde Fabíola Balarezo.
The least limiting water range (LLWR) has been used as an indicator of soil physical quality as it represents, in a single parameter, the soil physical properties directly linked to plant growth, with the exception of temperature. The usual procedure for obtaining the LLWR involves determination of the water retention curve (WRC) and the soil resistance to penetration curve (SRC) in soil samples with undisturbed structure in the laboratory. Determination of the WRC and SRC using field measurements (in situ ) is preferable, but requires appropriate instrumentation. The objective of this study was to determine the LLWR from the data collected for determination of WRC and SRC in situ using portable electronic instruments, and to compare those determinations...

Beutler,Amauri Nelson; Centurion,José Frederico; Silva,Alvaro Pires da; Centurion,Maria Aparecida Pessôa da Cruz; Leonel,Cristian Luarte; Freddi,Onã da Silva.
The research aimed to evaluate machine traffic effect on soil compaction and the least limiting water range related to soybean cultivar yields, during two years, in a Haplustox soil. The six treatments were related to tractor (11 Mg weight) passes by the same place: T0, no compaction; and T1*, 1; T1, 1; T2, 2; T4, 4 and T6, 6. In the treatment T1*, the compaction occurred when soil was dried, in 2003/2004, and with a 4 Mg tractor in 2004/2005. Soybean yield was evaluated in relation to soil compaction during two agricultural years in completely randomized design (compaction levels); however, in the second year, there was a factorial scheme (compaction levels, with and without irrigation), with four replicates represented by 9 m² plots. In the first year,...

Tensile strength, friability and organic carbon in an oxisol under a crop-livestock system Scientia Agricola
Guimarães,Rachel Muylaert Locks; Tormena,Cássio Antonio; Alves,Sérgio José; Fidalski,Jonez; Blainski,Éverton.
The crop-livestock system can promote soil compaction in surface layers, mainly due to animal trampling. However, plants and their root growth, in interaction with animal trampling, can decrease the deleterious changes in soil structure caused by this system. Up to the present time, the physical soil modifications in crop-livestock systems, including oat and ryegrass crops for winter animal forages are unknown. The objective of this study was to quantify and to relate tensile strength, friability and soil organic carbon in an Oxisol under a crop-livestock system. The study was conducted in Campo Mourão - Paraná, Brazil. Four forage heights were used for the winter forages: 7, 14, 21 and 28 cm. For each forage height, five soil blocks were randomly...

Visual soil structure quality assessment on Oxisols under no-tillage system Scientia Agricola
Giarola,Neyde Fabíola Balarezo; Silva,Alvaro Pires da; Tormena,Cássio Antônio; Ball,Bruce; Rosa,Jadir Aparecido.
Methods for evaluation the soil structure quality based on field evaluations are useful to determine strategies for soil management, with the advantage of requirement the use of little equipment and the possibility of immediate interpretation. A new methodology was recently developed to temperate soils for this purpose, called Visual Soil Structure Assessment (Ball et al., 2007). It was tested the hypothesis that it is possible to apply and advance in the interpretation of the results from use of Visual Soils Structure Assessment in cultivated Oxisols. Therefore the goal of this study was to apply, evaluate and enhance the potential of the methodology developed by Ball et al. (2007) in two Oxisols under long-term, no-till in Parana State, Brazil, as well...

Kramer,Luiz Fernando Machado; Müller,Marcelo Marques Lopes; Tormena,Cássio Antônio; Michalovicz,Leandro; Nascimento,Ronaldo do; Vicensi,Marcelo.
Soil management influences the chemical and physical properties of soil. Chemical conditions have been thoroughly studied, while the role of soil physical conditions regarding crop yield has been neglected. This study aimed to analyze the wheat yield and its relationship with physical properties of an Oxisol under no-tillage (NT). The study was carried out between 2010 and 2011, in Reserva do Iguaçu, State of Paraná, Brazil, on the Campo Bonito farm, after 25 years of NT management. Based on harvest maps of barley (2006), wheat (2007) and maize (2009) of a plot (150 ha), zones with higher and lower yield potential (Z1 and Z2, respectively) were identified. Sampling grids with 16 units (50 x 50 m) and three sampling points per unit were established. The...
